Week 3: The Spanish Armada

Well done everyone- we have had a brilliant start to the new term.
This week we will be continuing our research on Tudor explorers and finding out what life would have been like aboard the sailing ships. What jobs did people do? What did they eat and drink? How did they defend themselves?

The number of handshakes in the whole school, teachers and children, would be 14,196.
146 children + 23 teachers=169
169x168 divided by 2 =14,196.
The formula for handshakes is children x children-1 divided by 2.
Phillip II Spain sends the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588. 130 ships in crescent formation sail up the English Channel to be met by Sir Francis Drake. Drake has little impact on the Spanish ships until they are forced to land at Gravelines in Spanish Holland(Belgium) to take on more troops.it is then that Drake sends in his 'Hell burner' ships to break up the fleet. The Spanish with their escape blocked westwards, are forced to sail east around the coast of England and Scotland where they encounter violent storms which destroy many of their ships. Forced to land in Ireland (where they hope for a friendly Catholic welcome) they are attacked by the Irish people. They head home suffering from lack of food, water and serious illness.
Only 67 out of 130 ships made it home. Over 20,000 Spanish troops died. The English didn't lose any ships, but lost 100 men in the battle and 7000 from disease.
Sir Francis Drake was declared a hero.

Hello,
They had to take food with them that would last a long time. Food was often different kinds of nuts. They didn't have fresh food with them because they sailed for weeks and weeks. They did not have anything to keep there teeth nice and shiny like toothpaste so there teeth would fall out. There mouths will hurt and they would be sore.
