Week 10: Protect our wildlife!

What animals do you know that are in danger of becoming extinct? What is the problem? What is being done to tackle the problem?

This week many of you will be visiting your new school- how exciting!
Please remember we are going to the Safety Challenge on Monday morning so you need to be in school ready for a prompt start.

The Black-Faced Lion Tamarin is a small New World Monkey and it belongs to the Callitrichidae family . They live in the south-eastern forest in Brazil . They are extremely endangered . There are only 400 individuals left in the wild. To save these monkeys we need to stop cutting down trees as the trees are their habitats and sources of food in which comes from the rainforest .

The Snow Leopard from Nepal is listed as critically endangered. As few as 4,000 are thought to remain in the wild but as they are extremely elusive it is hard to verify. Snow Leopards are killed by poachers for their bones(used in Chinese medicine) and their beautiful precious fur. Their food sources are threatened due to their prey being hunted by man. Even their natural habitat is being damaged and lost because of overgrazing by domestic livestock.

Snow Leopards continued...

Anti-poaching patrols, increased law enforcement to stop illegal trafficking, working with the local communities to monitor the snow leopards are all measures that may help. Also compensating the farmers when they lose livestock so they don't need to kill the snow leopards for money.

Hey Mrs Green and evrybody,
I hope you had a good weekend. Yesterday me and my family went down to Derby to see my grandad because it was his birthday.

There are now less than 1,000 pandas left in the wild.

A hundred years ago there were 100,000 tigers in the wild, now there are less than 7,000. The South China tiger is struggling to survive.

There used to be millions of koalas in Australia. Now there are less than 100,000.

Why are they dying out?
Pollution, chopping down rainforests and building all affect animal habitats which means they have nowhere to live and nothing to eat.

Another big problem is humans introducing new plants and animals on to small islands. This can result in older species being wiped out.

Buying and selling some exotic animals for their skins like crocodiles is illegal in many places but people still do it.

Elephants are killed for their ivory tusks which are used for jewellery and medicine in some countries.

I'm really looking forward to the safety challenge and really really looking forward to AMVC taster day.

Hi
The humphead wrasse is a fish that lives in the Indian ocean. It's endangered mostly because it's a valuable tropical fish and can be expensive. To get this fish some people use illegal fishing methods that may be destructive.

Hello Mrs Green,
The Australian Koala bears are endangered. Hunters/Poachers are shooting them and they are giving them poisonous plants that kill them. Also there livelihood is being chopped down and they have less trees to live in.

P.S: It is Casterton School not Caster.
